Digital noise mainly happens from lack of light. It will be apparent in the shadows of your images when viewed at 100%. Setting you ISO too high will also cause digital noise while your camera is trying to compensate for lack of light. In some instances, where the noise is not too bad, you can use certain software programs (Neat Image, Noise Ninja, etc.) to correct the problem – although over-correction can cause your image to become blurry. Photoshop has despeckle and Lightroom has noise reduction also.
Below is the same photo that I have reduced the noise on.

I personally find the best place to look for noise is:
In the shadows under objects
If your picture is has a blue sky – look in the blue of the sky at 100%. It should be a smooth blue without little dots or other visible imperfections.
If the photo is a mug shot type image, look under the models chin, where the chin casts a shadow on the neck.
Rejections are frustrating and have a tendency to make people lose motivation. I’m hoping this little guide here helps with less rejections for happy contributors and buyers.
Quality Content = Happy Buyers = Repeat Buyers = More Downloads = Greater Royalties.
It’s a win / win situation.

AMEN! THANK YOU for addressing this issue and raising the bar on this site. It can only be a benefit for everyone.

What are you stats on this issue?
Do media buyers only buy images with no noise?
Have you ever seen a photograph used in a magazine ad with noise?
What would happen if you focused your product inventory on saleability and not on technicalities?
Providing a good product is what keeps buyers coming back to any microstock site (or any business for that matter - you get gross food at a restaurant, you dont go back). I personally haven't seen a photograph used in a magazine that has a lot of digital noise. From what I understand noise causes difficulty with printing. I'm sure it maybe fine for the web if the buyer doesn't mind having a bad shot, but Cutcaster has no way of knowing if every picture purchased is going to the web, print or whatever. I understand their technical requirements bring in buyers, and I'd rather have clean shots and make a sale - than make a sale and have to give a refund.
Think about it like this Zach, if you were a buyer would you go search and buy from a site that doesn't have good quality photos? Or would you go to one that does?

Buyers want photos that make a mark. They want photos that are eye-catching and fit their needs.
Then they want something that's technically proficient, but if they have the photo they need, and it has grain, they'll still buy the photo.
"if you were a buyer would you go search and buy from a site that doesn't have good quality photos"
Of course, but which type of quality are you talking about?
If you go to a restaurant and all the food is at the right temperature, the plate is very clean, the portions are laid out correctly, but then you take a bite and the food is terrible.
It all depends on where you place the emphasis - do you want a clean plate? Or do you want imaginative, flavorful food?
Most microstock agencies place all the emphasis in the wrong place. When they approve photos, all the emphasis is based on the 'clean plate' or the clean, technically sound photo. But there's much more to it than that. You can have a photo that is technically good, but lacks saleability. It lacks imagination and taste.
If you want a library of images that are technically correct, you'll get it. If you want a library that only cares about what the buyer will pay for, everything else be damned, then you might have something special.
Why not be the only requirement as sales?
Of course you don't want garbage, but one man's garbage is another man's treasure.
Let the market decide.
Zach,
If the plate's dirty - I'm not eating the food.
If the plate's dirty - I'm not eating the food.
You're missing the point. The point is simply this: let the market decide.
All these stock agencies act from the point of all knowers of the market. They know what the market wants, and so they will keep out the unwantable product.
My point is to decentralize this decisions process. Let the market dictate what is a good photo and what is a bad photo.
A good photo sells. A bad photo does not sell. Those are the standards.
If photographers see that a noisy photo will not sell, they will stop supplying the photo.
What would happen if the stock agency made the entire library founded on saleability? Where the only key to the gate was whether or not it sold, and whether or not the photos in your portfolio have sold?
If your photos sell, you're allowed to upload more. If they don't sell, then you need to do something else.
Instead, all the reward goes to the technically proficient photographers. The emphasis is on that, not sales.
Let the buyer decide, and then limit the supply to simply what the buyer wants.
If a photo is noisy and it sells, and sells well, who cares if it's noisy? The whole point is to meet the demand, not to create a library of millions of 'clean' photos.
If a buyer is unhappy with the product, you offer a return.
Otherwise, let the buyers determine the standards. And they determine the standards with their wallet.
